I am GLAD that you did preface your comment by pointing out that it is Canada! That said, YOU my friend, despite your original nationality, are thinking and acting like a White Guy. Taking from me, a non-white, going through immigration and customs IN ANY COUNTRY, you have no rights! You are totally at their mercy. I was detained in Tel Aviv and interrogated for 90 minutes as to WHERE my Sri Lankan passport was! I did not have a Sri Lankan passport. I had not had a Sri Lankan passport in over 12 years. They did not believe me. Canada has made me buy Canadian $400 (I think in those days, 1992, that was about $4 in real money), one-week work permit to enter the country. Check Google. http://www.clldf.ca/?cat=1 They have been doing these searches since around 1998. I know. I used to do a LOT of business with Canada and had folks coming to see me often. Some of them would find it funny. The agents were very specific about what they were looking for. The kind of porn we normal adults look at is fine, kosher. No problems with pictures of naked ladies, whatever activity they were involved in. Just looking for child porn -- and THAT IS OK BY ME. By all means try and stand for your constitutional rights when going through customs in country like Israel. Also check using Google what rights U.S. custom agents now have with YOUR laptop. May I suggest that you spend 15 minutes a day using Google to become familiar with your rights when traveling across borders.
Thanks.
P.S., This is CUSTOMS. You must have led a very protected life. They used to sniff your chocolates in Boston. Nothing to do with security, all to do with bringing unsavory objects into the country. Of, the indignities. I really am planning to write a book of my experiences in International travel -- which started in 1967. Some of it was great. Some people would NOT BELIEVE! 1970, I left my keys in the boarding area of Rome's Airport. I think it was Lufthansa. It was a 747. They turned it around went back to the gate so I could run back and get my keys. Honest. True story. I have flown on 747s with just 18 paying passengers. I have eaten on proper China on the top floor of a 747.

Am I the only one who sees a big constitutional (I know it was Canada, but surely even they have a some sort of constitutional protection against unreasonable search and seizure?) problem with just scanning everyone's laptops for porn when there is no a) probable cause and b) porn has obviously no effect on airplane security anyway.
What's next? Scanning for any copyrighted materials? Scanning for anything that a border officer might find objectionable? Demanding your Facebook password?

Not trying to excuse child porn possession, but loss of our privacy is too high a price to pay for catching an odd pervert.

Unfortunately, this article is short on facts like the age of Rev. Williams and the age of the child. Bad journalism, unworthy of the Old Grey Lady I'm afraid.
Google didn't reveal a bio for the naughty Reverend, but plenty of writings by him. Maybe he can write a tell all book and make some dough that way. He'll need it - see below.
<blockquote>Make sure you read paragraph 7. So is this another poor child abandoned by the Church on moral grounds even if the problem lies in clerics not being able to keep their pants up. Amazing. I hope the State goes after this deadbeat dad and makes sure he pumps gas, if need be, to pay sufficient child support.</blockquote>
Sigh. The problem is not that the clerics are "not being able to keep their pants up" but that they are part of a system that forbids them to "pull them down", as it were. Also a system that prohibits contraception; although, for the life of me I don't understand the attitude that if you commit the sin of both premarital sex and violation of your priestly vows you should still very much care about church's attitude toward condoms. As Martin Luther said, <i>"Be a sinner, and let your sins be strong"</i>. :)
But anyway, the child should have been supported. But the legal obligation of the parent should be contingent on their ability to pay such support. The adversarial child support system in this country where fathers are thrown in prison often for inability rather than unwillingness to pay (for example through job loss and courts being slow and/or unwilling to adjust support amount) is sick and unconscionable as would be going after someone who had just lost his job and had undergone a cancer surgery and is evidently not able, at least for the time being, to live and function on his own. Finally, support of one's child goes well beyond a monthly check. Being adversarial makes it far less likely that he will act as a father to this child, not more. Both the mother and the state need to work with him, not against him.
One more thing: employees pumping gas might still be a common sight in the backwoods of New Hampshire but in most of the country they are an endangered species. So I don't think that's a viable backup career path for him.

I don't think he says that at all! Sorry. What he says is very clear: Every person or institution will eventually let us down.

Oh, check the post. I am NOW convinced that Dolan is the much anticipated Peter the Roman. His Tweet was the FINAL confirmation of the prophecy. Remember Peter the Roman will bring much tribulation to the flock. Read between the lines. Peter the Roman will let the Catholics and the Church down -- ahead of the final downfall. Dolan has paved the way, with his Tweet. He is the Next Pope. Whats his name, that guy who writes for the NCR ... he too has said that Dolan is the Next Pope.

Dolan is popular among those that matter. He is Peter the Roman.

Thanks as ever.

Well I don't think he is saying "... ergo, you might as well ignore other people and institutions because they are worthless" but rather "... ergo, when a person or institution does let you down does not mean they are all bad because you can't expect perfection".

The former attitude is all too common and I think Cardinal Dolan's Tweet was means to argue against it, not in favor of it. He might have expressed himself a bit clumsily, but there is a limitation to the 140 char format.

By the way, you are joking about "Pope presumptive", right? I thought you did not think a pope from US is realistic. He would also be, at 62, way too young for at least another decade according to your criteria.

Oh and I found something interesting when <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=dolan" rel="nofollow">googling dolan</a> shows that the newly minted cardinal is not very popular. Ahead of a wikipedia entry on him we have a stupid Internet meme (about a poorly drawn psychotic Donald Duck clone called "Dolan"), a bicycle manufacturer from England, a shirt maker from LA, an Australian page about the history of name "Dolan", a UFOlogist, a lighting company, a musician and finally, Timothy Dolan himself in 9th place!

The next several consistories will show whether Detroit and Baltimore will go by the way of St. Louis. The last several abps. of St. Louis have been bypassed. Those that became cardinals had to move to Philadelphia and Rome. The last one from Baltimore had to move to Rome to be a cardinal.

Let me clarify 'in piano' for those that may find that expression puzzling. This is from the '<a href="http://catholicsites.org/clericaldress/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Dress of Roman Catholic Clergy</a>' (referenced above at the end of the post): "<strong>Pian Dress</strong>: <em>A second form of dress is described in the documents as for "solemn occasions outside liturgical celebrations," which has colloquially been called Pian dress (<strong>Italian abito piano</strong>) because Bl. Pope Pius IX extended its use in 1870 for papal audiences and other public solemn occasions. It is used on very formal occasions, whenever gentlemen are asked to dress in white-tie or black-tie, but also on other formal occasions when Prelates are expected to appear publicly in their official capacity in circumstances and places which allow them to wear the formal dress of the Church</em>".

The Walsh images show popes in liturgical dress chasuble over alb (which is always white). The other paintings where choir dress (seasonal mozzetta over white cassock). That leaves house dress (non liturgical but clerical). This was formalized by Pius IX in piano as the simar - the white cassock-like dress the pope wears daily. Maybe this is what St. Pius V started.

Thank YOU very much for this wonderful list. I would like to display it as a standalone post rather than just a comment -- so it can get more visibility. Darien Clark also submitted a list yesterday and just a few minutes ago I was able to post it in its final form with all of the color coding. I see you have some in common, which is great. So, will you think about submitting a full list so that I can post it? Thank you. All the best.

As we can see next consistory could be on last days of November 2012 or on February 2013. In first possibility will be 6 cardinal vacancies to nominal 120 (on 8th of December Eusébio Oscar Cardinal Scheid, S.C.I. will be over 80) and BXVI could elevate about 10-12 new cardinals under 80 with the threshold of 120 for 5-6 people. It shouldn't be strange because in next three months 5 cardinals will be over 80 (Barragan, Husar, Kasper, Polleto, Iniguez). In second possibility (consistory on early 2013) Pope can elevate about 15 new cardinals under 80 with about 5-6 over barrier of 120.

So as supplement to the list of David At. few my proposals:

Curial candidates:
1. The new Secretary of the Secretariat of State
2. Zygmunt Zimowski - President of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance to Health Care Workers
3. Salvatore Fisichella - President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization
4. Piero Marini - President of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses.

Residential candidates:
5. Francesco Moraglia - Patriarch of Venezia (Italy)
6. Cesare Nosiglia - Archbishop of Venezia (Italy)
7. Braulio Rodriguez Plaza - Archbishop of Toledo (Spain)
8. Jesus Ruben Salazar Gomez - Archbishop of Bogota (Colombia)
9. Jozef Kowalczyk - Archbishop of Gniezno (Poland)
10. Orani Joao Tempesta - Archbishop of Sao Seabstiao do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
11. Jose Serofia Palma - Archbishop of Cebu (Phillipines)
12. Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano - Archbishop of Managua (Nicaragua)
13. Damião António Franklin - Archbishop of Luanda (Angola)
14. Gregoire III (Loutfi) Laham - Patriarch of Antioch of the Melkites (Syria)
15. Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki - Archbishop of Lviv (Ukraine)
