  1. To begin with: A Happy and Prosperous New Year 2015 ! Hereby only a few reflections on today´s announcement concerning the creation of new cardinals:
Today there is another proof that the times are a-changing…it seems to me that Francis whom you called a ,maverick´ will finally be successful in setting new conditions. The candiates´ list for the forthcoming consistory is another step in this pope´s revolution: After February 14 the ratio between the cardinals of European origin and those coming from the ,other parts´ of the world will be 57:68 – otherwise 45.6 % to 54.4 % !
First of all there is (Thank God !) quite a bitter defeat of the curialists: Only one out of the fifteen who will be entitled to participate in a future conclave will get the Red Hat. Together with his scolding of the Roman Curia a few days before Christmas Francis obviously wanted to clarify that the dominant role hitherto played by the Vatican bureaucracy under JP II and B XVI definitively has to come to an end.
Another important message (which Francis already expressed to some extent on the occasion of his first cardinal reating consistory) is his quite persistent neglecting of so called ,traditional´ cardinalitial seats in Europe and Northern America. I have to admit that I really appraise that attitude ! Only to mention Italy – instead of creating the so called ,patriarch´ of Venice or the archbishop of Turin Francis this time decided that the Red Hats this time would go to Ancona and Agrigento. The two of them obviously were put on the list for their commitment and their merits in being witnesses of a Church being ready to serve. For a bishop of Ancona being made a cardinal you have to go back as far as to the 16 th century, for a bishop of Agrigento elevated to the cardinalitial dignity even to the times of the infamous Alexander VI !
Not to forget the more or less ,exotic´ countries of Africa, Latin America, Asia and Oceania which will get a cardinal on February 14 – nearly all of them in Vatican perspective are a kind of ,periphery´ which at the time of Francis´ predecessors commonly was neglected. So no wonder that his attitude in choosing candidates for the Red Hat is even called ,provocative´, There is another important aspect: Even if there may hopefully be a couple of years left for him to achieve his plans it seems to me quite obvious that Pope Francis intends to make some concrete provisions regarding his succession.
After the consistory in February 2015 a quarter of the cardinals (exactly 31 out of 125) participating in a future conclave will have been created by the ,Man from Argentina´. Most of them (I hereby except at any rate Gerhard Ludwig Müller who is an adamant and typical representative of the ,old regime´) seem to be in accord with the various developments taking place under Francis´pontificate. Concerning the question who may be papabile after the Argentine pope already brought up in this blog I should think that with a still growing number of members of the College of Cardinals coming from the ,outskirts´ and dffering in quite a lot of aspects from their colleagues it is not granted that the next pope will be chosen from among those who will want to go back to the ,good old times´.
    All the very best !
