Lord Marc Ouellet, the possible Next Pope.

Lord Ouellet turns 68 today. Happy Birthday — many happy returns. He is my #1 papabile for 2012, though I still agonize that he is a tad too young.

I have, as some who get e-mails from me already know, revised my estimates as to when we will see the next conclave. I think we will now see a conclave within the next 12 months, if not the end of this year.

Lord Bertone, despite all of the FUD that people are trying to create around him, still stands tall. A true giant at the Vatican. Lord Bertone is basically 10 years older than Lord Ouellet — and that is in his favor. If Lord Ouellet is elected ‘now’, he could easily reign, magnificently, for a 17 years — which would put him at 85, the age of the current pope. And that is the issue.

The Queen’s unsurpassed Diamond Jubilee celebrations this week highlighted the issue that monarchs are living for extended periods of time. The Queen is 86. They reckon she may still have another few years left.

Next week is the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) in Dublin. Link. Given the Catholic ‘issues’ in Ireland at present, the pope wisely opted not to attend the Congress. Lord Ouellet, a trusted confidant of this pope since 1972, will deputize for the pope. Young, bright and personable he will cut a mean figure. He will look presidential. People will wish he was THE POPE!
