He will not be Francis I until there is a Francis II.
John Paul I (#264) was an amusing anomaly. The new pope, in his understandable excitement, intoned ‘Ioannem Paulum primum‘. Nobody corrected him or second guessed him. Hence the ‘I’. Only time the first of a name was know as ‘I’ during his lifetime — albeit a tragically short one.
Pope Francis is Pope Francis.
Forget the ‘I’. That can wait.
Such a shame about Jean-Louis Tauran. It is known that he suffers from Parkinson’s (as did my mother). That can make your speech difficult to understand.
I watched the announcement live on CNN. I couldn’t understand what he said NOR could anybody at CNN! We had no idea who had been elected pope. I had to jump on my computer to find out.
It was a good 7 minutes before CNN worked out that it was Pope Francis.
Yes, Tauran did what he knew was his duty. Felt bad for him.
