Creating 6 keeps the cardinal electors (barring deaths) exactly at the permitted 120 limit, the 6th vacancy coming to be on November 23, 2012.

That Benedict XVI exceeded the 120 limit in his last 2 consistories, February 18, 2012 & November 20, 2010.
That he has opted not to exceed the 120 limit this time might be an indication that a conclave, which is the only time the 120 limit really matters, may be in the offing. Praise be to God.

No Europeans whatsoever.

Darien N. Clark, our Cardinalabili expert, had this to say:

“Where the heck did this come from? Seriously, I did not see this coming.

This, to me, signals that Benedict XVI may know his Pontificate is reaching its end soon. Aside from Harvey, they are all residential prelates, thus trying to balance out the Curial heavy February Consistory. Also, all non-Western prelates.

I’ll have more reaction later, but right now I’m too caught off guard to really say much. This is VERY unexpected. I was almost sure it would be May/June next year.”

So how did Darien do per his last Cardinalabili list:

1/ Archbishop James Michael Harvey, Prefect of the Prefecture of the Papal Household — listed as ‘less likely’.

2/ Patriarch Béchara Boutros Raï, O.M.M., Patriarch of Antiochia {Antioch} (Maronite), Lebanon — listed as ‘unlikely, but not impossible’.

3/ Major Archbishop Baselios Cleemis (Isaac) Thottunkal, Major Archbishop of Trivandrum (Syro-Malankarese), India — Not listed.

4/ Archbishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria — listed as ‘less likely’.

5/ Archbishop Jesús Rubén Salazar Gómez, Archbishop of Bogotá, Colombia Red (locked -in) Likely.

6/ Archbishop Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, Philippines Green Likely.

  1. Surprising consistory. I am not surprised at the Archbishop of Manila being elevated- it seems many think he may be the next Pope and Pope Benedict wanted him in the college. Anura, I am startled the Prefect of the Congregation ABP Muller not elevated.

  2. I am amazed at a new consistory now, and especially at the make up of the new men.
I expected Manila whenever it came. We are surprised that Westminster is not included, and I am very surprised that the new Prefect of the CDF is not included. I think we all thoght that it would be next year.
The discussion was about when in 2013 it would be. I look forward to other comments.
I notice that Archbishop Fisichella is not in the list despite the current synod on the “New Evangelisation.”

It is certainly a surprise, and quite a big one at that!

  3. To a certain extent this unexpected nomination reminds me of the circumstances of the consistory held on June 27,1977 when only four cardinals (remarkably Ratzinger was one of them) were created. According to some testimonials Paul VI who only a year before created 21 members of the College of Cardinals allegedly became aware of the fact that it was no much time left for him on earth and so he hastened in a similar surprising move to add a quite small number of candidates who at any rate should be made cardinals before his death.
As for the fact that there are no Europeans in the list it is quite clear that the pope finally felt a kind of obligation to ,balance´ the two precedent consistories which seemed to be dictated by the Roman Curia (especially by ,Lord´ Bertone) and dominated by candidates of European origin (out of altogether 46 cardinals only 15 came from outside of Europe). From that point of view it may be concluded then that the forthcoming creation could have been really Benedict XVI´s own idea so that this time the nomination would indeed correspond to the demands of Canon Law, especially can. 351,§1 which states that the pope ,freely selects´ the cardinals.
However, it is clearly to be seen that the pope quite hastily convokes this consistory which indeed may indicate that a conclave is not too far away…

  4. Looks like Pope benedict is playing politics in America by giving James michael Harvey the red hat being from Wisconsin the same as VP hopefull Paul Ryan a catholic himself. Will it work in favor or against?

  5. Marco,
It is ALREADY, thank God, a DONE DEAL. Obama is toast. Romney is President-Elect, though having a Mormon, who does not recognize and thus does not respect the popes, will be an interesting experience for Catholics. God works in mysterious ways BUT at least this is HUGE, HUGE WIN for Religious Freedom, having a NON-CHRISTIAN, per the Vatican, as U.S. President. Thanks. Cheers, Anura. Check the other posts for Romney stuff ….
