U.S. Cardinal William Joseph Levada turned 76 on June 15, 2012 — 17 days ago. His retirement from the high-profile, curial #3 post, viz. Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, had been much anticipated and talked about since he turned 75 last year. Well, he retired, the pope waiting until he had turned 76 before letting him go. Being let go when you are still 75 still raises eyebrows among the cynical — such as yours truly. The pope is off to his annual Summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo tomorrow (for what could be his last time Summer break). So, as is customary, this is when the Vatican clears its decks (and desks) and get as many retirements and appointments finalized. Now, only two over 75 curialist — Lord Bertone, at 77, quite literally the King of the Hill.
