I, as I stated yesterday, was skeptical from the start. All those clerics, all with plausible motives and they arrest a lowly layman with really no plausible motive.
I am relieved that the Vatican despite its enviable record over the centuries when it comes to bumbling coverups, did NOT claim that the poor butler, Paolo Gabriele, did it for the money. Thank God. That really would have confirmed that this was a setup. Confidential documents were the LEAST valuable of the papal objects at Paolo’s disposal. He could have made 10 times more money selling the pope’s red socks on CraigsList. So, we are all in agreement that money was NOT a motivation here. Thank God.
They claim that he, a busy, lowly servant, did it out of righteous indignation, disgusted by the corruption he saw, on a daily basis, around him.
Yes, it is plausible to an extent, but doesn’t make sense. He does not come across as an activist. Plus those that aspire to be butlers are not usually known to harbor much righteous indignation.
If he wanted to curb the indubitable corruption he had other, more effective, avenues open to him. He had unique access to the pope; he literally had the pope’s ear. He didn’t have to undermine the pope, he could have helped the pope.
Of all the people in the Vatican, bar Ingrid Stampa, he had the LEAST to gain from leaking these documents.
If he was unhappy with the corruption, he was not alone. There were others equally, if not more, chagrined — and many with more to gain by exposing the corruption.
To say that they found incriminating documents in his apartment is an INSULT to all Italian men! He would not have been that stupid. This bears all the hallmarks of yet another semi-thought out Vatican cover-up. I feel bad for him. He has 3 kids. What will happen to those kids?
