This is the 67′ bronze Cristo de El Cubilete (Christ King of the Mountain of El Cubilete) statue atop the 8,461′ hill known as Cerro del Cubilete (Dice Cup Hill) in Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Silao’s Parque Bicentenario (Bicentennial Park) sits below this hill. This where the pope, her his schedule, celebrated Mass on Sunday, March 25, 2012, in front of about 350,000 people.
The Cristo de El Cubilete monument commemorates the 1926 – 1929 Catholic uprising against the Mexican government and its then anti-religious laws that prohibited public Masses. The statue was completed in 1944. The Vatican has stated that John Paul II (#265) was always eager to see this statue but never got a chance! That seems strange given that he visited Mexico five times. He could have always done what Benedict XVI (#266) did today — fly by the statue in a government provided helicopter – in today’s case a Mexican military Superpuma.
