From my 'Pope Names' books -- where else.

From my ‘Pope Names’ books — where else.

John Paul I (#264) did have the distinction being the ONLY assumed pope name that had not been the name of a prior pope.

But both ‘John’ and ‘Paul’ were prior pope names. It was the amalgamation that made it different.

But ‘Francis’ was never the name of any prior pope.

It differs from ‘existing’ names such as Lando (#122), Agatho (#79), Zosimus (#41) etc. in that it was assumed.
