Marc Ouellet As Next Pope Gathers Momentum In Rome. #1 Pick In ‘The Next Pope 2011′ For 2012 — June 9, 2012.
Pope Benedict XVI Will NOT Resign. But, It Is Time For A New Pope. Lord Ouellet Looks Golden, But For Age.– May 31, 2012.
I got an e-mail this morning from ‘Andrea‘, our trusted informant from Tuscany, inquiring, ever so politely as is his wont, whether my recent promotion of Cardinal Ouellet, and as such a non-Italian pope, was ‘anthropomorphism‘ on my part. As ever he has a good point. Andrea also always keeps me grounded as to the strong emotional ties that the average Italian has with the papacy, though ‘Andrea’, who mixes weekly with the elite as with the likes of Giorgio Armani, is not your typical ‘average’ Italian. Funnily enough I too had been thinking about Lords Bertone and Ouellet, Vatileaks, the poor pope, the Vatican Bank etc. this morning — prior to his e-mail.
I ended up thinking about the Camerlengo — who just happens to be none other than Lord Bertone, papabile. There is a lot of talk about how Lord Bertone will cease to be the Secretary of State soon after his 78th birthday on December 2, 2012. You don’t have to be the S.S. to be Camerlengo. So, there is no reason, other than the pope’s will, for Lord Bertone to give up BOTH his post when he turns 78. He can continue to be Camerlengo until he turns 80 and is precluded from entering the conclave per the standard rules for all cardinals. So, Lord Bertone, THE MAN, can be Camerlengo until December 2014.
Let me make a BOLD prediction. The next conclave WILL OCCUR while Lord Tarcisio Pietro Evasio Bertone, S.D.B. is Camerlengo.
This will be the climax of the whole Vatileaks debacle. Lord Bertone will have his say.
Whether Lord Bertone will be the next pope, John Paul III (#267), will be entirely in his hands! Period. Yes, figuratively speaking heads will get banged. IOUs will be collected, if necessary in the voting urns. As in conclaves of past, ‘endearments’ will be whispered to wavering electors. This will be a conclave from the past. An Italian from the North will call the shots.
I think Lord Bertone can still squeak by with a bare minimum majority. Remember those whispered ‘endearments’. Scores will be settled.
So, as I have consistently maintained, it is possible that the next pope could be Lord Bertone, THE MAN. I think he will make a great pope in the mold of John Paul II (#265) — hence why I think he should be none other than John Paul III. ‘Benedict’ has again become a name associated with a weak pope.
If Lord Bertone does not want to be pope, Lord Ouellet stands a good chance — BUT for his age. It is a great shame that he isn’t even 70 as yet.
Cardinal Scola looks just plain ill. Is it stress and if so what does he know. His frailty could be his greatest asset right now. A 3-4 year caretaker pope for Lord Ouellet.
The European infighting in the Vatican has been hilarious. The Italians, the Germans and even the Poles — or at least that ‘I know better than John Paul II’ Dziwisz. Cracks me up that he is getting the blame for recommending poor Paolo Gabriele, the framed butler, to the German contingent — though he is denying that (as if his word is worth anything these days).
If Lord Bertone, after he settles the necessary scores, decides that he will let the electors have a fairly open conclave it is possible that the non-Europeans will muster behind Ouellet. One he gets 50% by round 3, the European flood gates will open — Spain and France. He can get the votes, provided that that is OK with Lord Bertone, Camerlengo, THE MAN — and papabile.
