Having provided us with his cardinalabili list on October 7, Louis e-mail this to me a few minutes ago (albeit in a rougher form).
I put it into my beloved tabular form, calculated the ages (in 4 minutes using Word and Excel) and made it into an image.
But, the research and work is all by Louis Epstein.
This is what he said in his e-mail, pertaining to this posting.
There was some confusion about this table last night and I took it down for awhile till I sorted it out.
From what I have no gathered what this table shows is the SUCCESSION of the youngest cardinal in the College since 1901.
OK. Take Puljic created in 1994. Between his creation in 1994 and that of Erdo in 2003, no other cardinals were created who had a birthday later than that of Puljic. Does that make sense.
*********************************************************************************************************
Meanwhile,as ages of cardinals at creation have been discussed, here is my table of who the youngest cardinals have been since 1901.
I believe Cardinal Erdo is now the oldest youngest cardinal in history, or at least in centuries!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Wojtyla (47) and Ratzinger (50) definitely belong on that list.
Del Val and Hriste, in their late 30s. Just wow.
Thank you.
Not sure of the methodology of this list.
I DID wonder about Wojtyla. I though he was 48. Just checked. YOU ARE RIGHT. 47.
Ratzinger 50.
But, Pecci, Leo XIII (#257), just prior to the start of Louis’ table was 43.
Chiaramonti, Pius VII (#252), was 42.
But to me these cardinals are OLD.
Cardinal Fernando de Austria was YOUNG. I guess 10 is young … right? Yes, 10.
Not one Medici, but two — one at 13 the other at 14. That is young.
All of this is in the book. So I just looked it up. Do you have a copy of THE book?
Thanks & Cheers
Anura
You appear to have completely missed the point of the table.Every man on it has been, for the period indicated, the youngest member of the College…it shows the upward trend in the minimum age in the College over the years.Woyjtyla was more than a year older than Bengsch, created in the same consistory, and thus was never the youngest Cardinal…while there is no one younger than Erdo in the College today.
I just want to ask something?
It was mentioned in the post that Cardinal Erdo is believed to be the oldest youngest cardinal in centuries yet the table shows that Cardinal Lopez Rodriugez was 3 years older when he became a cardinal. Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez was 54 against Cardinal Erdo’s 51 years. So who really is the oldest youngest Cardinal at least in centuries? Thanks.
In terms of how far into his juniors a Pope was willing to reach,Pius IX was born in 1792 and his youngest Cardinal (Parocchi) was born in 1833;Leo XIII was born in 1810 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1863;Pius X was born in 1835 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1865;Benedict XV was born in 1854 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1872;Pius XI was born in 1857 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1888;Pius XII was born in 1876 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1906;John XXIII was born in 1881 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1913;Paul VI was born in 1897 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1928;John Paul II was born in 1920 and his youngest Cardinal was born in 1952;and Benedict XVI was born in 1927 and has yet to name a Cardinal born after 1949,though he is certainly expected to do so in the coming months.
Louis,
yes, I misunderstood. Thanks for clarification.
Anura,
those medieval youngsters don’t really count, now do they. Although there is one advantage of having prepubescent cardinals – celibacy is not a problem.
What book?
Dom,
Erdo is oldest youngest cardinal now, not at his creation. Rodriguez was 57 when he was replaced as “baby of the College of Cardinals” by Puljic, and Erdo is 58 now. That’s because B16 failed to create any cardinals under 60 at his 2 consistories. It looks like the new baby might be Marx from Germany, who at 57 will be the oldest baby at creation.
P.S.: Cardinal Sin? Now that’s funny. Is he referred to as the 8th Cardinal Sin perhaps (in addition to the other 7, sometimes also being called Mortal Sins)?
My friend,
In my book, right now, there is ONLY ONE BOOK:

YOU do have it right?
SMILE. Loved your comments about prepubescent cardinals and celibacy … not sure about the 10 year old but I am sure the 13-14 year Medicis were quite precocious.
Thanks. Cheers,
Anura
Since Cardinal Sin has died,he was clearly a mortal Sin.
